The BARS Rating technique is an incredibly versatile tool, but many of use rarely receive an in depth education or experience with with it. Through this three-part series, you will learn: 1) how to create BARS, 2) how to train evaluators in the use of BARS, and 3) how to analyze and use the results.
In this workshop, we will focus on best best practices of standard setting with assessors with BARS:
1. Learn key considerations for how to select assessors
2. ***Learn best practices of the assessor training content
3. Learn about acceptable BARS evaluation practices and procedures
4. Learn how to facilitate the evaluations using BARS
Laura Hausman is the Personnel Administrative Manager for the Columbus Civil Service Commission’s Police and Fire testing team. She leads the team that is responsible for the development, administration, and scoring of all entry-level and promotional Civil Service Exams for the sworn ranks with the City of Columbus. The testing team she supervises is committed to fair selection processes that give applicants access to demonstrate their skills and perform at their best.
Laura has over 25 years of experience with the Columbus Civil Service Commission developing exam questions, various exercises, and scenarios for both police and fire examination processes. She has experience in the development and administration of multiple examination types including multiple-choice, written work sample, in-basket, tactical, and oral board exams. Laura’s expertise with BARS has been gained through training, experience, and the practice of using BARS for scoring oral board exams and written work samples throughout her career.
In 2004, Laura was part of the team that was awarded the IPMAAC (IPAC) Innovations in Testing Award for their work in developing in-house video exams. Laura has presented at IPAC in 2004, 2013, and 2022. She served on the host committee in 2013 and 2023. Laura also participates as a member of the Great Lakes Employment Assessment Network (GLEAN).
